Abstract

1501870 Fuel elements UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 Nov 1975 [18 Dec 1974] 54760/74 Heading G6C In a fuel assembly comprising a bundle of fuel pins spaced apart by a series of cellular grids at intervals along the length of the bundle (Figs. la, 1b not shown), each fuel pin has a waist disposed at a common end region of the bundle and the cell-forming structure of corresponding cellular grid has resiliently yieldable projections extending radially into the cells to engage the waists of the fuel pins. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the fuel pins 1 (only one shown) have lower end caps 9, and each end cap has a waist 10, a cylindrical land 11 and a tapered end region 12 providing a lead-in surface for the fuel pin 1 in the cellular grids 8 during assembly. The lowermost cellular grid 8 has three radial projections 13 engaging the waist 10 to hold the fuel pin 1 captive with the end cap 9 in end abutment with a lower grid member 6. The projections 13 consist of elongate embossments of rhomboid form arranged with the major -diagonals parallel to the longitudinal axes of the fuel pin and they have tapered end regions 14 to provide a lead-in surface for the fuel pin entering a cell. The waist 10 and grid 8 are dimensioned such that the fuel pin 1 remains captive by the embossments 13 when the relatively low (e.g. 3 lb.f.) levitation force of coolant flow is applied but the embossments deflect to release the fuel pin when an axial load of, say 7 lb.f., is applied to the fuel pin. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the projections consist of leaf-springs (15) disposed with their longitudinal axes parallel to the longitudinal axes of the fuel pins. -The springs comprise formed strips of resilient material and are housed in slots in the grid structure, the spring ends being welded to the ends of the slit. In another construction (not shown) the projections consist of leaf springs comprising formed strips stamped from the grid structure.
