Abstract
1386411 Cooling towers SERCK INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 July 1972 [14 July 1971] 33082/71 Heading F4K In a cooling tower in which a flow of cooling air is caused by at least one fan (not illustrated) to flow through the tower in heat exchange with a liquid, the fan or fans are located wholly or substantially wholly below ground level. By this means the environmental noise normally caused by such fans is said to be reduced. In the tower shown, water to be cooled descends through packing 13 wherein it is cooled by an upwardly flowing air stream. The lower portion 11 of the tower structure is rectangular in form and fan housings 18 are arranged along two opposite sides thereof (see Fig. 3) and below the ground level 19. The air inlet 20 to each fan housing 18 may comprise a filter, the filtered air flowing through intakes 21 into the tower. The upper part of the tower structure comprises a funnel section 12 which may be surmounted by a chimney (e.g. 120 ft. high) of stainless steel. The packing 13 may be arranged in cells each of which is on rollers so that it may be run in and out from its operating position for ease of maintenance.
