Abstract

1386069 Chemical extraction of iron NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 Feb 1972 54175/70 Heading ClA [Also in Division C7] Iron is extracted in a process which comprises converting iron contained in a feedstock into FeCl 2 in the form of an aqueous solution using an aqueous chloridizing agent containing HCl, precipitating the FeCl 2 from the solution using an agent containing HCl, oxidizing the FeCl 2 to FeCl 3 , and reducing the FeCl 3 to metallic Fe using a gaseous reducing agent containing H 2 . Preferably the oxidation takes place at a temperature at which FeCl 3 is volatile, under anhydrous conditions and with an oxidizing agent containing O 2 . The effluent HCl-containing gas from the reduction stage may be used as a source of HCl for the chloridation and/or precipitation stages, and the heat in the gas may be used to dry the FeCl 2 prior to oxidation. The feedstock preferably contains metallic iron but may be an iron oxide and is preferably chloridated at atmospheric pressure and at 85‹ to 105‹ C. The reduction may be carried out in two stages, the reaction being preferably at 600‹ to 800‹ C. and the product may be in the form of a powder. If the raw material used is Fe 2 O 3 , chloridation yields FeCl 3 and either steps may be taken to avoid this or the FeCl 3 must be reduced to FeCl 2 before continuing. It is also possible to use FeS as feedstock. Cl 2 or FeCl 2 may be added in the oxidation stage where there is an HCl deficiency.
