Abstract
1386068 Chemical extraction of iron NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 Feb 1972 [13 Nov 1970] 54174/70 Heading ClA [Also in Division C7] Iron is extracted in a process which comprises converting iron contained in a feedstock in the metallic state into ferrous chloride using a gaseous chloridizing agent containing HCl and H 2 , oxidizing the FeCl 2 to FeCl 3 and reducing the FeCl 3 to metallic Fe using a gaseous reducing agent containing H 2 and HCl, effluent gas from the chloridation stage being used in the reduction stage and effluent gas from the reduction stage being used in the chloridation stage, the relative proportions of HCl and H 2 in the said stages being those kinetically necessary for the process. The oxidizing agent preferably contains oxygen and is preferably carried out under anhydrous conditions. The oxidation may take place at a temperature at which FeCl 3 is volatile to remove impurities, preferably 400‹ to 500‹ C. Chloridation is preferably carried out at 400‹ to 600‹ C. and with a decreasing temperature through the reactor from the point at which the gas enters gaseous chlorine or extra FeCl 2 may be added. The reduction may be effected in two stages and at a temperature of 600‹ to 800‹ C. The iron produced may be in powder form.
