Abstract
1385598 Flame arrestors LAURENCE SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS Ltd 17 Aug 1973 39004/73 Heading ASA [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A flame arrestor for electrical apparatus comprises an exhaust passage for combustion and exhaust products and arranged therein first flame arrestor means for cooling gas and flame and, downstream thereof, second flame arrestor means for inhibiting a flame or spark from reaching the surrounding environment, the second means having a higher pressure drop and lower heat absorption capacity when in use than the first. The Figure shows a flame arrestor assembly which may be attached to a terminal box. Exhaust passage 1 consists of two distinct stages, first stage flame arrestor 3A, 3B, and second stage arrestor 4A, 4B. Arrestor 3A, 3B consists of metal grid plates arranged with their diamond shaped openings successively at right angles and separated by wire spacers, the metal being of high melting point, e.g. mild steel, at inlet side 3A, and low melting point, e.g. aluminium at 3B, to obtain the maximum heat absorption capacity. Arrestor 4A, 4B consists of a porous metal, e.g. a foam or gauze, with inlet 4A having a larger pore size than outlet 4B. The arrestor may alternatively be used in conjunction with a transformer tank filled with liquid or gas, or a cable sealing box filled with solid compound or liquid dielectric.
