Abstract

1385524 Displays and code conversions OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 10 April 1972 [19 April 1971] 16354/72 Heading G4H [Also in Division H3] A system for supplying operating potentials to a load device (e.g. a gas panel display) having row and column conductors, includes a first matrix for selecting one of the row conductors and a second matrix for selecting one of the column conductors, each of the two matrices having a plurality of cross-point elements each having a nodal point N connected to one of the conductors and at least three electrical paths to the nodal point, one path including a resistive element R1 and the other two containing respective unidirectional conducting devices Dl, D2, there being means for applying a pulse potential between a common point and the end of the resistive element remote from the nodal point, one of the unidirectional conducting devices D2 being connected directly between the nodal point and the common point, and there being a non-inductive switching device between the end of the other unidirectional conducting device D1 and the common point and means for applying a switching signal to the switching device to give it a high impedance. To select a cross-point in one of the two matrices, the corresponding one of a number of column transformers 20 is pulsed to render a transistor T1 in the cross-point conductive. This tends to raise the potential at N. and via diode D render the SCR shown conductive but such conduction is prevented at the required cross-point by a pulse applied to the corresponding one of a number of row transformers 25. A square, sinusoidal or trapezoidal periodic sustain waveform is applied from a generator 10 (another generator supplying an inverse waveform to the other dimension of the gas panel via the other selection matrix). Fig. 3a (not shown) shows a modification in which all the polarities are reversed. Figures 4a, 4b (not shown) show modifications (with respective polarities) in which the SCR is replaced by an NPN transistor (though a PNP transistor could be used). Fig. 5b (not shown) shows a modified connection of transistor T1 of Fig. 1, with reversed polarity. The transistor T1 in either connection could be PNP instead of NPN. Specification 1,385,525 is referred to.
