Abstract

1319301 Television ENERGY CONVERSION DEVICES Inc 8 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 22368/70 Heading H4F To display a television signal on an X-Y addressable array of electroluminescent elements, row electrodes 17-21 are sequentially energized at line frequency and the video signal 31 is converted at 30 to a parallel form which is used to energize respective column electrodes 22-27 after time delays determined by the amplitude of the video signal at the corresponding points in the addressed row, so that the addressed elements are energized thereafter until the row electrode is de-energized, for periods corresponding to the desired brightness at the individual elements. As described, vertical sync pulses 29 cause the output of an oscillator 28 to be gated to rows 17-21 in turn, and horizontal sync pulses 32 actuate the converter 30, i.e. they constitute the points in time from which the delay of energization of electrodes 22-27 is measured. Each electroluminescent element 37 acts as a capacitor in a circuit 16 comprising also a resistor 35 and a threshold switching or Ovionic device 36. The device 36 is bi-directional and switches from a high to a low impedance condition when a threshold voltage in excess of a threshold value is applied, after a delay related to the magnitude of the excess voltage, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). When the applied voltage is switched off, the threshold turn-on voltage is lower than the original value and takes some time to return thereto, Fig. 5 (not shown). Therefore if the length and magnitude of pulses from the converter 30 is sufficient to turn the device on initially (in combination with the output of oscillator 28), the output of oscillator 28 may be sufficient and of sufficiently high frequency, Fig. 5A (not shown), to repeatedly switch the device on at its reduced threshold voltage. The delay before energization of an electroluminescent circuit may be determined by the magnitude and/or timing of pulses from converter 30. Arrays of other geometries, e.g. polar, may be used for other display purposes.
