Abstract

1385355 Burner controllers PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 15 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 11998/72 Heading F4T [Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a multi-cylinder hot gas engine 1 and to the control of the air supply 4 to the burners 2 of the engine according to the quantity of fuel being supplied. Each heater comprises a temperature-sensitive element 11 which controls a fuel control mechanism 13 in the fuel supply pipe 3 of the associated burner. Each fuel supply pipe comprises a flow restricting element 14 across which during operation a pressure differential exists which is proportional to the rate of supply of fuel. A selecting device 15 is provided which has a plurality of inlets each communicating with a corresponding one of the fuel supply pipes 3 of the burners on the outlet side of the flow restricting element therein and this device is arranged automatically to select the lowest of the pressures prevailing in the fuel supply pipes on the outlet sides of the flow restricting elements and transmit this lowest pressure to a control member 17 which is responsive to the pressure differential between the lowest pressure and a constant pressure in a common fuel supply pipe 5 and which member is arranged to control in accordance with this pressure differential a flow control mechanism 20 in a common air supply duct 10. As shown, the valve 20 is controlled electrically by the member 17 but it is stated that an hydraulically controlled valve may be used. A number of modifications are described and embodiments in which the air flow and fuel flow are both employed to operate the combustion air control valve are described.
