1384526 Shortenable umbrella frames BREMSHEY A G 29 Dec 1972 [21 Sept 1972] 30665/74 Divided out of 1383668 Heading A4P A shortenable umbrella frame has a telescopic stick 1 with telescopic ribs 7 pivoted to a crown 6, main struts 25 pivoted to ribs 7 and to a main slider 24, auxiliary struts 29 pivoted to struts 25 and to an auxiliary slider 27 above slider 24, and spreader elements 46 each extending between the crown 6 and slider 27 and being formed in two sections 46', 46" connected end to end at a knee joint 12" so that when slider 27 approaches the crown 6 the elements deflect so that the joints 12" move radially away from the stick and when the slider 27 is at its closest point to crown 6 the spreader elements 46 can fold downwards alongside the stick with the joints 12" remote from the crown 6, whereby in use when the frame is covered to form an umbrella and the umbrella is folded and being shortened the elements 46 spread a mushroom of the cover adjacent to the crown. The elements 46 are preferably of resilient plastics and are oriented around the stick to lie, in plan view, between adjacent pairs of ribs 7. The joints 12" are formed by so called "film-hinges". The element sections 46', 46" may be of substantially U-shaped cross-section, except adjacent the knee 12", so that they rest within one another when the elements are folded alongside the stick. Alternatively, the elements 46 may be integrally formed with each other in the form of a tube which is slit longitudinally except adjacent its ends which thereby form rings one of which abuts the crown 6 and the other abuts the slider 27. Automatic folding down of the elements 46 occurs if the sections 46" are slightly shorter than the sections 46'. The upper stick part 2 is circular in section except at its lower end which has a crosssection corresponding to the polygonal section of the lower stick part 3.
