Abstract
1383579 Jointing by stamping WEATHERHEAD CO 5 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46061/72 Heading B3Q A machine for crimping end fittings on boxes has a collet-die in which the jaws are spaced by resilient members. The collet is split along at least one radial line for lateral insertion of the work. In one form, Fig. 4, elastomeric spacers 43 are bonded or moulded to opposed jaws 23 to form two semicircular elements, the spacers 43a between the elements being attached to only one of them to permit lateral insertion. The spacers are of such a size that a light grip is applied to a fitting under the influence of gravity when the axis of the machine is vertical, the gripping surfaces 46 defining a cylinder at the end of a crimping stroke. A bevel-closing ring 19, Fig. 1, is movable between stops 26, 35 in the operative and inoperative positions of the ring. The elastomeric spacers may be cylinders extending axially of the collet, Fig. 8 (not shown). In another form, Fig. 11, the spacers are integral with a base 91 passing through holes 87 in a skirt 85 on the jaws 78. Alternatively, Figs. 13a and 15, the skirts may be attached to semicircular spring boxes 114, spacers 103 being attached to the jaws 97 by screws 104.
