Electrode furnaces.-An electrode which is without a core or casing and baked in the furnace in which it is used is suspended by a holder attached to its lower hardened portion. The holder may be water-cooled, and may be external or internal. When external, it may be constructed so that the weight of the electrode causes it to grip; it may carry a casing into which the raw electrode material is tamped. When internal, the holder may consist of a tube m split at its lower end into three or four parts, which are spread by a cone n on a rod o. In this case the furnace, which is of the closed type, is surmounted by a casing or mould l. When separately moulded electrodes are used, they are given a preliminary baking in a separate furnace to harden their lower portions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 116,853.
