Abstract

1383392 Hydrotreating hydrocarbon oils EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 1 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 4713/72 Heading C5E A first hydrocarbon feedstock is hydrotreated with excess hydrogen in a first hydrotreating zone and the effluent from this zone is cooled by mixing with a second hydrocarbon feedstock and the mixture is hydrotreated in a second hydrotreating zone; the hydrogen uptake of the first feedstock is greater and that of the second feedstock is lesser than if the two feedstocks had been treated together in the two zones. The feedstocks treated can be crude oils, residual oils, shale oils, tar sand oils and liquid coal products; the first and second feedstocks can be similar feeds having different boiling ranges. A third feedstock can be added to the effluent from the second zone and after hydrotreating this mixture a fourth feedstock can be added to this effluent and the mixture hydrotreated in a fourth zone. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment in which the interstage cooling is assisted by quenching with water and Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an embodiment in which the interstage cooling is assisted by indirect heat exchange. The hydrotreating is carried out at 650-850‹ F. and 680-2000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising Cr, Mo and/or W together with Fo, Co and/or Ni on a carrier such as alumina, alumina-silica, zirconia and titania and which can contain bauxite, bentonite or montmorillonite.
