Abstract
1383078 Microphones PLESSEY CO Ltd 29 March 1973 [26 April 1972] 19406/72 Heading H4J [Also in Division H1] A microphone for a telephone handset utilizes a strip of tensioned, fluorinated hydrocarbon piezoelectric material whicn carries electrodes on its opposed surfaces. The material may be polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinylfluoride or fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer. As shown a strip of such material 27 carrying electrodes 28, 29 is tensioned between clamping rings 30, 31 which support a thin metal conical diaphragm 40. The latter is coupled at its apex to the material possibly via an insulating layer of plastics, paper or a metal oxide. The material is between 0À0001 and 0À05 inches thick. The electrodes are applied by evaporation or by painting. In another arrangement (Fig. 1, not shown) the diaphragm is of plastics, e.g. polyester sheet to the centre of which one end of the piezo material sheet is affixed. The other end of the material is secured to a tension-adjusting screw. In Fig. 3 (not shown) there is depicted a flat, thin metal diaphragm which is rigidly coupled at its centre by a rod to the centre of a piezo material strip, the rod being affixed to the diaphragm and strip at either or both its ends or simply being compressed therebetween.
