Abstract
1382954 Underwater oil well apparatus BLACK SIVALLS & BRYSON Inc 19 Feb 1973 [5 April 1972] 8118/73 Heading B7A A submersible apparatus 10 for producing an underwater oil well comprises: (a) an oil and gas separator 12 having a well stream inlet 70, a gas outlet 72, and oil outlet 74 and a liquid-level controller connection 76; (b) a pair of elongated ballast tanks 18, 20 attached to the separator 12 and provided with means for filling the tanks with either liquid or air to provide ballast or buoyancy; (c) a pair of buoyancy vessels 28, 30 also attached to the separator 12 and provided with means (e.g. rams 42, 52) for moving them so that the distance between the centre of buoyancy and centre of gravity of the apparatus 10 may be changed to give maximum stability to the apparatus while it is under tow on the surface ; (d) an instrument capsule 80 also attached to the separator 12 and having a liquid-level controller connection 82, oil inlet and outlet connections 86, 88, liquid-level control means 160 within the capsule 80 for generating a control signal proportional to the variance between the actual liquid-level in the separator 12 and a desired liquid-level, the liquid-level control means 160 being connected to the liquid-level controller connection 82 of the capsule 80; (e) a first conduit 146 removably connecting the liquid-level connection 76 of the separator 12 and the capsule 80; (f) a second conduit 118 removably connected between the oil outlet 74 of the separator 12 and the oil inlet 86 of the capsule 80; (g) valve means 164 situated between the oil inlet and outlet 86, 88 of the capsule 80 and responsive to the control signal generated by the liquid-level control means 160 for controlling the rate of oil removal from the separator and hence the liquid level therein and (h) means 202 for adjusting from outside the capsule 80 the liquid-level control means 160 with respect to the desired liquid-level.
