Abstract
1434357 Laying sub-aqueous pipes T H DUYSTER 17 Dec 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 43167/72 Heading B7M [Also in Division F2] A method of constructing a pipeline on the floor of a body of water, e.g. ocean, in which during transportation under water and laying and connecting to existing pipeline a long perfabricated pipe section is subjected to tensile forces and kept in a floating position. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the tensile forces in the pipe section 1 are produced by vessels 2 (only one shown) connected to opposite ends of the pipe section 1 by cables 4, which pull in opposite directions with different forces to give a net movement in direction A. The pipe section 1 is kept in a floating condition by means of submarine floats 5 and individually adjustable buoyancy floats 7 connected to the pipe section 1 by claws 8, releasable by means of explosion bolts 22. The floats 7 have a pressure chamber 12 filled partly with air or another gaseous medium under pressure and partly with water or another liquid and have an opening in the lower part connected to a valve 10 responsive to the external water pressure. The valve 10 comprises a piston 23 positively acted on by compressed air in line 11 and by the external water pressure such that the pipe section with float at a depth determined by the pressure in the line 11. Thus excess pressure in line 11 urges piston 23 downwards allowing water under pressure from conduit 9 to be admitted to the float 7 via a duct in piston 23. With excess external pressure the piston 23 is urged upward to allow fluid to be expelled from float 7 by the pressurized gaseous medium therein. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the pipe section 1 is provided with weights along its length at regions suspended from vessels (3) by means of cables (19) the vessels (3) being provided with elements (6) which compensate for the movements of the vessel due to waves. During the laying of the pipe section it is guided in a transverse horizontal position by means of additional vessels which support the pipeline by means of cables. These vessels may be those already supporting the pipe section as in the embodiment of Fig. 1, or vessels which connect to the pipe section by means of floatable cable pulley units (15) releasably mounted on floats 7 with explosion bolts (16). The pipe section may be guided transversely by further surface vessels (not shown).
