Abstract

1382913 Waste fittings MATTHEW HALL & CO Ltd 12 June 1973 [13 March 1972] 11707/72 Heading A4N [Also in Division El ] A combined refuse disposal and drainage system, of the kind adapted to be fitted to a kitchen sink or other fixture and operated by flushing water or other liquid, comprises a bowl 1 surrounding a vertically slidable waste tube 11, in inlet opening 2 of the bowl through which both waste liquid and solid refuse pass into the waste tube 11 from the sink or similar fixture, an outlet opening 3 of the bowl for connection to the pipework 5 of a waste disposal plant, as shown via intermediate valve chambers 4, a first valve member 13 arranged to close both the lower end of the waste tube and the opening 3, a second valve member 22 arranged to close, independently of the first valve member, the opening 3, and manual means for operating the valve members. The preferred embodiment has a plug housing 8, for a sink plug 9, secured to the upper end of a guide tube 10 and detachably mounted on a plate housing 6 of a sink 7 by bar and slot bayonet connections. The waste tube 11 is slidable within the guide tube but is prevented from being raised from its lowermost position when liquid level in the bowl is below a predetermined minimum, the prevention means being a latch plate 21 engaging the upper end of the waste tube, the plate 21 being carried by an arm 19 which is pivoted at 20 to the guide tube,and carries a float. When the liquid level rises above the predetermined minimum, the float rises and pivots the arm 19 so that latch plate 21 is released from engagement with the waste tube. The first valve member 13 is semi-spherical and is pivoted to the waste tube at 15, a cut-away portion 16 of the guide tube allowing a predetermined vertical movement of the waste tube while a bifurcated block 18 on the latter co-operates with a slot 17 in the guide tube to prevent relative rotation. By means of a control rod 32 engaged in the block 18 and passing externally of the bowl to engage, via spring 35, a lever 25, one end 27 of which is slidable on a guide rod 28 only when the resistance of spring 31 is overcome while the other end 26 co-operates with a lever 24 acting on the pivot 23 of the second valve member 22, the latter is normally opened simultaneously with the first valve member upon raising of the waste tube, the levers 24, 25 and valves moving successively to the chain-line positions, but should an obstruction or back pressure occur in the pipework 5 the resistance of spring 31 is overcome and the end 27 of lever 25 slides along the guide rod 28, the end 26 of lever 25 being then unable to move beyond a notch 36 in the lever 24.
