Abstract

1382825 Recovery of metal from scrap cables; ball mills; filtering and settling BRITISH COPPER REFINERS Ltd 16 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 7001/71 Headings B1D B2A and B2H [Also in Division C7] A process for recovering metal from scrap wires or cables having a sheathing or insulation of polymeric material comprises milling the scrap in an enclosure 1, passing a stream of a swelling agent for the polymeric material through the enclosure so as to carry away fragments of the said material, passing the stream to a separator 2 in which the fragments are separated from the swelling agent, and recycling the latter to the enclosure. The enclosure 1 is provided with a removable cover 5 and contains six balls 6 each weighing 10.7 kg. It is rotated at 60 r.p.m. by a belt drive engaging a pulley 9 and a stream of methylene chloride passed therethrough until a substantially particle-free effluent is obtained. The enclosure 1 is then stopped, the liquid drained off through a valve 7, the cover 5 removed and the copper wire taken out. When the enclosure is rotating the stream of methylene chloride passes to a settling tank 2 provided with a gauze 12. The particles of polymeric material are withdrawn through a valve 11 and the liquid returned to the enclosure 1 by a peristaltic pump 3. In a modification, the enclosure 1 is stationary and is provided with positively driven impacting bodies.
