Abstract
1381966 Automatic titration METTLER INSTRUMENTE AG 17 Aug 1972 [1 Feb 1972] 38504/72 Heading G1N In an automatic titration apparatus in which the titrating agent is supplied in a series of individual amounts to the specimen to be tested a respective next individual amount of titrating agent is supplied only when the differentiated output from the sensor measuring a titrating parameter falls below a predetermined value and preferably remains below the value for a predetermined time. A titration vessel containing bivalent iron to be tested is provided with Pt/Ag AgCl measuring electrodes and the permanganate titrating agent is added in 0À1 ml quantities from a burette controlled by a driver including a stepping motor and a variable frequency pulse transmitter. The delivery speed is set at remote control 17 by controlling the frequency of the pulse transmitter and then the apparatus is started. The potential as measured by electrodes 11 is amplified and differentiated with respect to time in amplifier 14, and then passed through an analog amplifier 28, the sensitivity of which can be set, to a threshold switch 29. As shown in Fig. 6 when the differentiated value of the protential E<SP>1</SP> falls to the point corresponding to a threshold -G of the switch 29 timers 30 are set in operation. The timers delay is composed of one time interval tint which depends upon the maximum valve M1 reached by E<SP>1</SP> and another time interval text which is set depending upon the required sensitivity of the apparatus. After this interval of tint + text then if E<SP>1</SP> still lies in the region between +G and -G of the threshold switch a signal is passed to data transfer 31 which causes the potential supplied by amplifier 14 to be indicated on a digital indicator and recorded on a chart, and an analog digital reset 32 to be triggered. The reset 32 passes a signal to an increment pulse counter 33 which passes a starting signal to the burette driver 13 to cause a further volume of titrant to be applied. If however the value of E<SP>1</SP> passes outside the threshold region before the time interval tint + text has passed both timers 30 are reset and the delay begun again, and no signal is applied to the data transfer 36. The process is repeated until the value of E<SP>1</SP> lies between -G and +G at the end of the delay tint + text. The titration process may be conductometric, voltametric, amperometric, photo-metric or thermometric. The titrating agent may be generated electrolytically.
