Abstract
1381609 Carbon disulphide RHONEPROGIL 8 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 21431/72 Heading C1A Carbon disulphide is prepared by bringing a hydrocarbon or a mixture of hydrocarbons into contact with sulphur vapour and sulphur dioxide at a temperature of 500 to 1000 C. for 0À3 to 10 seconds in the absence of a catalyst. Hydrocarbons specified include olefines and diolefines, cyclohydrocarbons, complex mixtures such as the paraffinic, aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbons which make up light petroleum distillates and heavy distillate residues. The amount of total sulphur (i.e. sulphur vapour and that combined as sulphur dioxide) is at least stoichiometric (2 atoms of sulphur to each carbon atom in the hydrocarbon). The number of moles of sulphur dioxide introduced should be at least equal to of the number of gram atoms of hydrogen in the hydrocarbon. Any sulphur produced during the reaction may be removed by condensation.
