Abstract
138,131. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. Dec. 3, 1917. Recoil apparatus.-Relates to hydro-pneumatic recoil apparatus of the type comprising a separate hydraulic brake and a recuperator in communication with an air-reservoir cylinder provided with a floating piston separating liquid from air, and comprises the following features :-(a) The hydraulic-brake cylinder C, shown in sectional plan in Fig. 2, the air reservoir B, and the recuperator cylinder D are located side by side at substantially the same level, the air reservoir being in the centre. In the construction shown, the cylinders are connected to the lug A<X> of the gun barrel, and the rods of the brake piston C<1> and recuperator piston D<1> are connected at the front end to the front cover A<1x> of the cradle A<1>. The stuffing-box H<2> of the air reservoir B is in rear of the stuffing-boxes of the other two cylinders, but the adjustable gland H<3> of the air reservoir is in line transversely with the glands of the other two cylinders, so that all the glands can be adjusted through a bottom opening ax in the cover A<1x>. (b) The piston-rod H of the floating piston B<1> projects beyond the cover A<1x>, and is protected by a sleeve H' on the cover. The position of the end of the rod H indicates whether the recuperator requires replenishing with liquid. The recoil stroke is regulated in known manner, according to the elevation, by rotating the piston C<1> by a toothed gear G<3>, G<2>, actuated by a crank G<1> connected by a longitudinal rod to the gun carriage at a point some distance in front of the trunnion axis. The run-out may be controlled by a rod F on the brake piston C' entering a cylinder F' towards the end of the run-out, from which chamber the liquid escapes through a regulatable by-pass as described in Specification 138,288. A buffer tank is mounted on the gun barrel in the manner described in Specification 138,287.
