Abstract

1381318 Valves; ratchet mechanism GENERAL MOTORS CORP 2 Nov 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 50540/72 Headings F2V and F2Q In an I.C. engine the poppet valve 10 is rotated on opening by the increased force of valve spring 16 acting through a collar 32 bowing a conical spring washer 40 to force balls 36 circumferentially along inclined top and radial inner walls of grooves 56 against the radial bias of annular spring 38 to thus cause the cap 34 that is secured to the valve stem to rotate. The radial inner walls of the grooves increase in distance from the valve stem as the grooves increase in depth.
