1380728 Decorative article S G PANVALKAR 5 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 14666/71 Heading B5A A decorative article is made by extruding a plurality of thermoplastic polymer rods, or tubes, on to the surface of a collector so that they become attached to the collector and to each other, and then inverting the surface to cause the extrudates to gravitationally stretch during cooling. The polymer may comprise polyethylene, e.g. of density greater than 0À94, or ethylene polymerized with a minor preparation of propylene, butylene, or hexene; acrylonitrile; polybutadiene; styrene (ABS) terpolymers; and toughened polystyrene. The plurality of extrudates preferably comprise six, and at least twelve; may be of round, square, oval or star-shaped section; are preferably of a length width: ratio of at least 2 : 1, e.g. 4 : 1; may differ in colour; and may comprise tubes having inner and outer surfaces of different materials, e.g. high arid low density polyethylene. The collector may form part of the article, e.g. if made of a thermoplastic polymer, or may be removable, e.g. if of cardboard, and may be sprayed with adhesive to improve adhesion to the extrudate. The collector may be stationary, or may be rocked or inclined when inverted as the extrudes cool, and the extrudates are preferably cooled whilst inverted to a degree that they do not flow upon return to an upright position.
