Abstract

1380558 Laminates P J V LUC 7 Jan 1972 [29 Oct 1970 10 Feb 1971] 51473/70 and 4359/71 Addition to 1224891 Heading B5N [Also in Division B3] A method of bonding aluminium to a metal, a material in liquid state, a cellulosic material, an inorganic material or a thermosetting plastics material includes executing rapid relative movement of a friction tool and a surface of the aluminium to be bonded or of the tool and a working surface while the working surface is juxtaposed to a surface of the aluminium to be bonded and, before, during or after the execution bringing that aluminium surface into intimate contact with the material, such that due to the effect of the relative movement of the tool and the surface or the tool and the working surface the material and aluminium surface bond together. The bonding may be overall or in selective areas only. The aluminium may be bonded to paper, aluminium, woven glass fabric, woven cotton fabric, cardboard, a ureaformaldehyde resin, a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a polyimide. The tool is preferably a rotating friction wheel co-operating with a metal backing roll covered with rubber. Auxiliary excitation of the bonded area may be effected by sonic or ultrasonic energy, heat or the application of electrical energy.
