Abstract

1379513 Welding by pressure; jointing P J V LUC 17 Jan 1972 [23 Oct 1970 14 Dec 1970] 50494/70 and 59366/70 Addition to 1224891 Headings B3R and B3V In a method of forming a joint, particularly a side lap-seam joint in a can or drum, the periphery of a high-speed rotary wheel is pressed into rubbing contact with a surface in closely spaced relation with the joint surfaces, the frictional heating, pressure and rubbing action combining to effect an adhesive or cohesive bond without fusion of the joint surfaces. The lapped workpieces may be subjected to auxiliary treatment such as sonic or ultrasonic vibrations applied, e.g. through a backing wheel or member opposite the rubbing wheel, or to electrical or dielectric heating or electrical arc or corona discharge. The rubbing wheel is normally applied to a surface of one of the parts to be joined but where damage to the surface might arise, e.g. in the case of a thin metal foil an interlayer of material, e.g. of P.T.F.E. which will not become bonded to the foil may be used. The process may be used to effect metal to metal bonds and reference is made to bonding tinplate, rolled steel, steel coated with a protective coating of chromium and chromium oxide or chromium phosphate or rhodium (removal of the coating being unnecessary) and aluminium foil to tinplate. A bond may be formed between metal parts using an interlayer of thermoplastic or thermosetting material deposited in liquid, film or particulate form or of solder and specific examples are given of bonding aluminium parts or tinplate parts with a nylon interlayer. An example is given of forming a can seam using a ribbon of solder between the tinplate surfaces. In apparatus for forming a can body a hardened. steel wheel 11 operates in a gap 7 of a jig 6 in which a can body having overlapping ends 9 is mounted on an expansible mandrel 10. The jig is traversable on rails 14 past the wheel 11.
