Abstract

1,224,891. Welding by pressure. P. J. V. LUC. 1 Dec., 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 39153/66. Heading B3R. [Also in Divisions B2, B5, C7, D1 and E1] Two areas of the same or different materials, e.g. metal, are bonded together by treating a solid surface of one or both of them by relative parallel movement between a tool and a solid working surface which is a surface other than the solid surface to be treated, this frictional treatment causing bonding when the areas are brought intimately together. Specified friction tools include a rotating ball, a cone, a nylon brush, a felt cylinder, a polytetrafluoroethylene, polyimide, felt or steel disc, an aluminium, steel or tungsten-plated steel drum, and a metallic ripple-edged wheel. Suction means may be provided within or on one side of the tool to hold the surface in contact therewith. Preferably, the speed of movement of the tool is at least 75 cm./see. relative to the working surface. If the speed and duration of the friction are insufficient to create a bond adhesion may be achieved by auxiliary means, e.g. electrical fields, ultrasonic vibrations using the frictional tool as an anvil, or heat. In one embodiment, Fig. 18, for the discontinuous intermittent sealing in circular areas of a tin foil sheet to a silver foil sheet, the friction tool comprises a rotating steel cylinder 48 coated with tungsten carbide and recessed at 48a. The tool is mounted on the rod 50a of a piston 50b in a pneumatic cylinder 50 the operating cycle of which is controlled by a timer 51. The sheets 59a, 59b are placed on an insulating backing sheet and the tool acts through a steel sheet coated with polytetrafluoroethylene.
