Abstract

1313465 Grinding balls S MESSERSCHMIDT [trading as SPEZIALMASCHINENFABRIK] 25 May 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 17014/71 Heading B3D A device for working balls comprises a rotary plate 1 and a non-rotary plate 2 arranged in substantially parallel relationship to define a gap therebetween in which the balls are worked, the plate 2 having an aperture or slot 23, 24 extending radially with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotary plate 1 through which balls can be inserted into and removed from the gap, and means 12 for urging the plates together in a direction parallel to the rotary axis of the plate 1, the centre of the applied pressure lying eccentric to the axis of rotation of the rotary plate and on the opposite side of the axis from the aperture or slot whereby the force per unit area acting upon the balls present in the gap increases to a maximum from entry of the balls into the gaps and thereafter decreases until discharge of the balls from the gap. The rotary plate 1 is carried by a disc 3 on a shaft 4 driven by gearing 5 and a belt 6 from an electric motor 7. The non- rotatable disc 2 is carried by a plate 8 acted upon by springs 10 abutting a pressure plate 9 on the rod 11 of a fluid pressure motor 12. The plate 2 is formed with the aperture which is divided by a central partition 30 into an entry zone 23 and removal zone 24 for the balls carried by a magazine 13. which is disposed eccentrically of the plates and driven by gearing 15, 16 from a motor 14. The aperture displaces the centre of gravity of the plate 2 by the distance x from its centre 21 to the position 20. With the point of application of the pressure at position 20 a uniform pressure acts on the balls in the gap. With the point of application moved to a position 92, the pressure increases in a curve from a minimum adjacent theentry zone to a maximum and then reduces to a minimum adjacent the removal zone. The balls are guided into the entry zone 23 and from the removal zone 24 by guides 31 on the central partition 30. Each zone is provided with linings 33,... 36 of shock absorbent material, such as nylon, the linings 33, 35 having shoes 37, 38 at their lower ends which, with the linings 34, 36, form gapes 39, 40 for the passage of the balls to and from the gaps between the plates. Guiding grooves 41, 42 are formed in the linings 34, 36 and similar grooves 45 are formed beneath the shoe 37, the grooves being aligned with concentric grooves 43 in the lower plate. Fingers 48 on the shoe 38 assist in lifting the balls from the grooves 43 in the lower plate into the removal zone 24. An eccentric drive or oscillating magnets 49 vibrates the lining 33 to assist distribution of the balls in the entry zone.
