Abstract

1380452 Photo-electric flaw detectors GAO GESELLSCHAFT FUR AUTOMATION & ORGANIZATION mbH 18 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 33532/72 Heading G1A Flaws in a proper web are detected by scanning at two areas which are substantially identical in respect of permissable zones of varying transparency, the scanning arrangement being provided with a regulating mechanism for aligning the scanners with the identical areas, and the scanners including photo-electric cells the outputs of which are differentials. As shown, Fig. 3, a moving, proper web bearing repetative watermarks arranged in pairs across its width is scanned by two detector arrays 6 each having a plurality of detectors (5) connected to individual differentiating circuits 8. The differentiated output of each detector in one array is subtracted from that of the correspondingly positioned detector in the second array by means of differential amplifiers 9 the resulting signals then being combined by an OR gate 10 the output of which is applied to a threshold circuit 11 which produces an output on detection of a flaw greater than a pre-selected severity. Each detector array is also provided with two detectors 14, 15; 16, 17 which scan the web ahead of the main array and are connected to a servo system which adjusts the position of the scanning head relative to the watermark when this is detected. This ensures that the correspondingly positioned detectors in the two arrays view similar points in the two watermarks is that no fault output is produced if the watermarks are identical. The detectors (5), which may be photo-transistors, are spaced from the web and are provided with masks close to the web having slots extending across the width of the web to define their field of view and are arranged in two rows, alternate detectors being staggered and spaced so that their fields of view overlap slightly. Security threads may be scanned by an additional array of detectors which are arranged in pairs along the length of the thread and cover a transverse distance somewhat greater than the permissible tolerance in the lateral position of the thread, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The differences between the differentiated outputs of the pairs of detectors are obtained and combined as described above. The system may use the transmission of light through the web or may respond to the fluorescence of materials in the web excited by incident radiation.
