Abstract

1380447 Blow-moulding; preform heating MONSANTO CO 24 April 1973 [25 April 1972] 19251/73 Heading B5A Thermoplastic preforms are selectively heated without degradation to orientation temperature for blow-moulding by exposure to a microwave energy field for ¢-30 seconds. The preform may be formed by extrusion-blow-moulding or injection and may have a finished neck portion and a body portion, only the latter being exposed to the microwaves, e.g. by shielding the neck portion. The body portion may be heated uniformly by use of suitably shaped or sized wave guides. The preform, after heating to a suitable temperature may be placed in a blowmould (48, Fig. 6, not shown), longitudinally stretched by plunger (53) to orient the material and blow-moulded by air supplied through orifices (54) in plunger (53). The preform may have a varying cross-section or wall thickness. The preform is preferably made from a polymer of high nitrile content, the nitrile monomer being acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile &c. Comonomers may include: ethylenically unsaturated aromatics, e.g. styrene, which may be alkyl- or halo-substituted, esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. methyl acrylate, &c., ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. acrylic acid, vinyl esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl and vinylidene halides, e.g. vinyl chloride, vinyl ethers and α-olefines, e.g. ethylene, propylene.
