Abstract

Textile materials are finished by activating them by means of a radical forming substance, applying thereto a vinyl phosphonic acid ester, semi-esteramide or amide, or a mixture thereof, in admixture or in solution with one or more comonomers, and grafting the monomers to the textile materials by heating them to 80-160 DEG C. Comonomers specified for use with the vinyl phosphonic compounds are acrylic and methacrylic acids and their esters and amides, maleic acid, maleic and furmaric esters, vinyl esters, styrene, styrene sulphonic acid and formaldehydes. Textile materials specified are those made from cotton, polyolefines, polyethylene terephthalate, a vinyidene cyanide/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyacrylonitrile and polyamides. Activation of the textile is preferably effected by ozonization. The monomers are preferably diluted with organic solvents or water before application to the textile materials.
