Abstract

Polyamides are bonded to polyvinyl chloride, copolymers thereof, or substrata, e.g. textiles, paper, or synthetic resinous material, precoated therewith by applying a first intermediate layer consisting of a solution of a polymer or copolymer of an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester and thereupon applying either a solution of nitrocellulose and polyamide or a second intermediate layer of a solution of nitrocellulose followed by applying a polyamide. The coated sheet is an artificial leather and its properties may be improved by subjecting the sheet after drying to a further heating to 180-220 DEG C. preferably by infra-red irradiation. The examples relate to textile fabric precoated with plasticized polyvinyl chloride. The nitrocellulose should be alcohol soluble and the solutions may contain a sulphonamide softener. Exemplified solvent for methacrylic acid methyl ester is a mixture of esters and tetrahydrofuran, while that for the nitrocellulose and polyamide is a mixture of alcohols which includes a minor proportion of water. Formaldehyde may be included in the polyamide solution for hardening purposes.
