Abstract

Foamable thermoplastic polymeric strands S are extruded and chilled whilst passing through grooves in endless surfaces, e.g. rollers or belts and are then cut into pellets. In an example, the material may be polystyrene with 4% by weight of pentane. The material may also be cellulose ethers and esters, e.g. ethyl cellulose, and cellulose acetate or homopolymers and interpolymers of monomers having the CH2=C grouping such as olefins, e.g. ethylene, isobutylene, vinyl halides, e.g. vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride; vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, e.g. vinyl acetate, butyrate, stearate, bensoate; vinyl ethers, e.g. vinyl methyl ether, ethyl ether or isobutyl ether, unsaturated carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, e.g. acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methylacrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and interpolymers of the vinylidene monomers with polycarboxylic acids or derivatives thereof, e.g. maleic anhydride, diethyl maleate, dibutyl fumerate or diallyl or dipropyl maleate, styrene, o-, p-, 25-dichloro or 2,4-dichlorostyrene, p-methyl- or p-ethyl-styrene, vinyl napthalene, alpha-methylstyrene, and blends of styrene with natural or butadiene-acrylonitrile rubbers. The foaming agent may be pentane, hexane, heptane, petroleum ether, cyclopentane, cyclopentadiene, acetone, methanol, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, methyl formate, ethyl formate, dichloroethylene, isopropyl chloride, propionaldehyde and diisopropyl ether. The focusing agent may be used in an amount from 2 1/2 to 10% by weight.
