761,641. Moulding reinforced synthetic resin tubes. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.- GES. Nov. 25, 1954 [Nov. 28, 1953], No. 34227/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a continuous process for making tubes of synthetic resin polymer reinforced with fibres or strands, the fibres are drawn through a mass of polymerizable resin and introduced into a space between a mandrel and a tube surrounding the mandrel, are then heated to polymerize the resin and the resulting tube continuously drawn off. The resin may be a polymerizable mixture of a polymeric unsaturated ester with styrene in the presence of a peroxide polymerization catalyst, and the fibres may be of glass, cellulose derivatives, polyamides or polyesters. As shown, glass fibres or strands are drawn through the polymerizable material in funnel 2 into the vertical annular space 4 between a tapered mandrel 3 and a hollow element 1. A heating means 6 to effect polymerization is provided at the point at which the mandrel begins to taper and a cooling zone 7 at the base of the funnel prevents premature polymerization. The tube so formed is withdrawn at constant speed. The glass strands may be arranged parallel to one another, in spiral form, or may be braided.
