Abstract

1380212 Controlling reactors B A MASLENOK A S KHEGAI V G ZLOBIN V G MEDNITSKY L I GENKIN N F PETRICHENKO and B I MITROFANOV 1 May 1972 20089/72 Heading G6C In an arrangement to prevent spontaneous movement of a control rod due to an emergency pressure differential caused by a leakage in the containment casing of the control rod drive, a piston 10 bearing against a rest face 13 is housed in a chamber 8 formed in the lower part of the containment casing (1) (Fig. 1, not shown), which chamber 8 has in its upper portion a tapered surface 15 for arresting movement of the drive rod 5 with the aid of wedging members, e.g. balls 16 in radial slots 17 of the piston 10, while at its bottom portion channels 14 communicate with the reactor vessel, a partition tube 9 surrounding the drive-rod 5. The upper part of the piston 10 is tapered in congruence with the tapered surface 15. The piston 10 is sealed by packing rings 11 and is pressed by a spring 12 against the rest face 13. If a leakage should occur in the containment casing, the resultant pressure difference will cause the reactor coolant to pass up through the channels 14 into the chamber 8 and push the piston 10 upwards. As the piston 10 rises, the balls 16 come into contact with the tapered surface 15 and are pressed inward against the drive-rod 5, thus arresting its upward movement.
