Abstract
1380082 Extruder feed device K R MATTHEWS & CO (WORCESTER) Ltd 25 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 5496/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] The feed of plastics, in the form of powder, granular, or fragmented scrap sheet or film, from a hopper 10 to the screw of an extruder 16 is facilitated by a rotary screw feeder 24 at the outlet 12 of the hopper and which is driven by a compressed air motor 21 providing, at a given setting of a compressed air pressure regulating valve 28, a constant torque at a varying speed depending on the compaction of material in the conveyer 16. The motor 21 also provides the facility of stalling without damage under excessive load, and then automatically restarting. The feeder 24 in the tubular outlet 12, is located either symmetrically of a conical shaped hopper, or asymmetrically of an asymmetrical shaped hopper. The feeder drive shaft may be provided with agitating blades, vanes or projection s 30, or the feeder may project upwardly from the outlet 12 into the hopper 10 with a progressively increasing diameter. An electric heating coil may be provided around the lower portion 11 of the hopper, and compressed air may be admitted to agitate material in the hopper 10, via an inlet 40 and conduit 41 form the supply to the motor 21. The drive shaft 23 is located by bearings 25a, 25b, of a frame 19 supporting the motor 21 and attached by radial arms 20 to the hopper 10.
