Abstract

1379889 Counterbalancing; load carriers SAFETY TECHNIQUES Inc 7 June 1972 26472/72 Headings B8B and B8H A horizontal load carrier for use in depositing a load within or removing a load from an opening in a building comprises an elongate beam member 23<SP>1</SP> which is connected by means of spreader cables 261, 27<SP>1</SP> to the hoist line 22<SP>1</SP> of a crane, there being a sling 28<SP>1</SP> carrying a load 29<SP>1</SP> mounted on the end of the beam member 23<SP>1</SP> and on the other end of the beam member 23<SP>1</SP> is a counterweight carriage 38 whose position on the member 23<SP>1</SP> is adjustable therealong such that the beam member 23<SP>1</SP> remains substantially horizontal at all times both in a loaded and unloaded condition. A cable 41 is attached at its ends to respective stop plates 43, 44 and passes about a drum 52 mounted on the output shaft 51b of a gear-box 51 which is connected to a reversible motor 48 powered by two D.C. batteries 45, Fig. 6. On attaching a hook to the loaded sling 28<SP>1</SP> and raising the beam member 23<SP>1</SP> by means of the hoist line 22<SP>1</SP> the beam member 23<SP>1</SP> tilts in an anticlockwise direction and on reaching a predetermined tilt (which may be approximately 5 degrees) one of a pair of mercury switches (53), Fig. 7 (not shown), mounted at the side of the carriage 38 is actuated and thereby connects the batteries 45 to the motor 48 which causes the drum 52 to be driven in the appropriate direction to move the carriage 38 and the counterweights 30<SP>1</SP> located thereon, which initially are located towards the centre of the beam member 23<SP>1</SP>, towards the end 23e<SP>1</SP> of the beam member 23<SP>1</SP> thus returning it to a horizontal condition. On depositing the load the beam member tilts in a clockwise direction and the other mercury switch (53) causes the motor (48) to be driven in the opposite direction thus moving the carriage 38 and counterweights 30<SP>1</SP> towards the centre of the beam member 23<SP>1</SP>. The cable 41 is maintained taut by being attached at its ends to respective helical springs (57g, 56g), Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), located adjacent the end plates 44, 43 respectively.
