Abstract

1379750 Copolymerizing conjugated dienes STAMICARBON NV 30 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 60642/71 Heading C3P Conjugated dienes are copolymerized with an anionically polymerizable monoalkene (e.g. monovinyl aromatic compounds) in a solvent for the monomers in the presence of an anionic initiator other than boron trifluoride or a complex thereof (preferably a Li compound) and at least one cocatalyst comprising a metal compound or complex of a metal or metalloid (except cobalt, nickel, titanium or vanadium) which is soluble in the reaction medium and which has oxidizing properties. In the examples; isoprene is polymerized with styrene in cyclohexane using sec.-butyl lithium and as cocatalysts Fe<SP>3+</SP>, Cr<SP>3+</SP>, La<SP>3+</SP>, Ce<SP>4+</SP>, Cu<SP>2+</SP>, Hg<SP>2+</SP>, Bi<SP>3+</SP>, uranyl and ruthenyl 3,5-diisopropyl salicylates, MoCl 5 , PCl 5 , SnCl 4 , PbEt 4 and Mn<SP>3+</SP>, Zr<SP>4+</SP>, Fe<SP>3+</SP> and Cr<SP>3+</SP> acetyl acetonates and butadiene is polymerized with styrene using see.-butyl lithium and Cr<SP>3+</SP> 3,5-diisopropyl salicylate. In comparative examples cocatalysts titanium tetrabutylate, VOCl 3 , zinc stearate, triethyl aluminium and dibutyl magnesium are used.
