Abstract
1,161,511. Polymerization. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 30 Aug., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 38693/66. Heading C3P. Organic monomers are polymerized by introducing it into a reaction zone together with a catalyst comprising (a) an anionic polymerization catalyst selected from Group IA and Group IIA metals and derivatives thereof of formula MR x , M w R<SP>1</SP> and RMX where R is hydrogen or an organic radical, R<SP>1</SP> is organic radical capable of forming two carbon-metal bonds, M is a Group IA or IIA metal, x is the valence of M, w is 1 when x is 2 and 2 when x is is 1, and X is halogen; and (b) a cocatalyst selected from compounds of formula M<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP>(y-z)X 3 , MM<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP> 4 and M(M<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP> 4 ) 2 wherein M<SP>1</SP> is a Group IIIA element, R<SP>11</SP> is an organic radical having a carbon atom bonded to said metal, X is hydrogen or halogen, y is the valence of M<SP>1</SP> and z is 0 or 1; the molar ratio of (b) to (a) being less than 1 to 1; and subjecting the materials to polymerization conditions until a preponderant proportion of the monomer is polymerized. Preferred monomers are olefinically unsaturated compounds, and many suitable monomers and catalyst components are specified. Examples describe the copolymerization of butadiene with vinyltoluene, isobutylene and vinyl toluene, isobutylene and α-methyl styrene, and butene-1 and isobutene in hexane in the presence of catalysts comprising dispersions of sodium, potassium or lithium; triethyl aluminium, diethyl aluminium chloride, triisobutyl aluminium, or diisobutyl aluminium hydride; and optionally isopropanol or dodecanol as modifier.
