Abstract

1283213 Two-stage copolymerization SOC NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE 13 Aug 1969 [14 Aug 1968] 40570/69 Heading C3P Copolymers are obtained by (1) polymerizing one or more olefins (mono- or di-), or aromatic vinyl compounds in the presence of a Group Ia, IIa or IIIa organo-metallic compound or Li, Mg, Be or Al hydride, a Group IV to VIII transition metal compound and a compound MY x where M is a Group IIb metal or boron and Y is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, hydrogen or halogen, and x is the valency of M, and (2) copolymerizing with the non-deactivated product above a vinyl, aromatic vinyl, acrylic, methacrylic or diene comonomer in the additional presence of a free-radical initiator. In examples, ethylene, propylene or a mixture thereof are polymerized in the first stage in the presence of Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 , Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl or Be(C 2 H 5 ) 3 /TiCl 3.1/3 AlCl 3 , VOCl 3 , VCl 4 or TiCl 3 H/Zn(C 2 H 5 ) 2 , ZnCl 2 , Zn(C 6 H 5 ) 2 , Zn(C 3 H 7 ) 2 , Cd(C 2 H 5 ) 2 , or (C 2 H 5 ) 3 B and methyl methacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile or mixtures thereof, dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof with methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, hexyl methacrylate or vinyl carbazole are polymerized in the second stage with the addition of oxygen, or cumene or paramenthane hydroperoxide. The copolymers, which are probably of block structure, are useful for aiding the mixing of incompatible homopolymers of the monomers used in each of the stages above.
