Abstract

1379601 Verge trimmers P D McCORMACK 1 March 1972 [1 March 1971] 5725/71 Headings A1E and A1F A tractor mounted road verge trimmer comprises a rotary head 16 having flails 19, which is driven by an hydraulic motor 21, a support beam 10 which is pivotally connected to a mounting bracket 13 by radiating arms 11, 12 and two hydraulicrams 47, 48 which, respectively lower/raise the beam 10 between a working and inoperative position. A deflector 28 guides material further away from the road and includes a flexible rubber skirt 43 mounted on its leading edge, a baffle plate 35 and a shoe piece 37, the leading edge of which is formed as a coulter, which skids along the road surface and is connected to a lower hinged deflector section which is held by a shear pin 39 which breaks if the shoe encounters an unyielding object. The deflector 28 is adjustably mounted on the beam 31 so that it may be moved to compensate for wear on the flails. The flails may be mounted on four spindles 20, each carried by three, equispaced brackets 18 on a respective face of a square section, hub piece 17 and spaced apart by distance pieces 26. Alternatively the head may comprise a hub having four paddle blades and each blade having a row of wire flails.
