Abstract

1379556 Extruding JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 14 April 1972 [27 April 1971] 11509/71 Headings B3P and B3H A non-lubricated metal component 11 is extruded using a punch and die set, 13, 14 wherein the die 13 and/or punch 14 is formed of hot pressed silicon nitride. In one embodiment, a bright drawn steel billet is extruded to form a component 11 using a tungsten carbide punch 14 and a silicon nitride die 13 enclosed by a metal shrink ring or a conventional tool steel case. The extruded component 11 is ejected by an ejector 15 and is then backwardly extruded using a high speed steel die (18) (Fig. 2, not shown) and a silicon nitride punch (17) removably mounted with a backing member (22) (Fig. 3, not shown) in a steel holder (21). The punch (17) has a fine surface finish, a taper whose included angle is 7 degrees and a conical end (19) having an apex angle of 170 degrees. Both the punch and the die may be formed of silicon nitride.
