Abstract

1379059 Railway vehicle undercarriages SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd and MITSUBISHI DENKI KK 12 May 1972 22432/72 Heading B7L A fail-safe railway car suspension system to control car body roll, using air springs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> adapted to be disposed between the car body 8 and chassis 6 (e.g. a bolster as shown), has a normal roll controlling apparatus comprising air feeding valves 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and air exhausting valves 3, 3<SP>1</SP> in pipes connecting the air springs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> with an air reservoir 1, the valves 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> being operated by signals from a controller 9, and a checking circuit 15 which, on detecting abnormal lateral acceleration of the car body relative to the chassis after failure of the normal roll controlling apparatus, operates either the air feeding valves 2, 2<SP>1</SP> (as in Fig. 2) or further air exhausting valves 7, 7<SP>1</SP> (as in Fig. 1) so that spacer means 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are engaged to hold the body 8 laterally centred relative to the chassis 6. In Fig. 1, the spacer means 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are elastic projections 4 1 and 4 1 <SP>1</SP> carried by a base 10 on the chassis 6 to support the car body 8 via corresponding projections on the underside thereof, after the springs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> have been exhausted. In Fig. 2, the spacer means 4, 4<SP>1</SP> comprise slotted members 13, 13<SP>1</SP> attached by pins 14 and 16 to the car body 8 and chassis 6 so that after sufficient air has been fed to the springs 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, the body 8 is held at a fixed height relative to the chassis 6.
