Abstract

1526970 Vehicle suspension MPPHILLIPPE 30 Dec 1975 53161/75 Heading B7D An independent suspension system for vehicle wheels 20 includes a fluid pressure servo unit 26 which in response to the lateral forces which cause body roll when cornering varies the suspension geometry to maintain the wheels 20 perpendicular to the running surface. As shown the wheels 20 are connected to the vehicle chassis 30 by upper and lower links 17, 18, the position of the pivots connecting the upper links 70 to the chassis being varied by the servo unit 26. Operation of the servo unit 26 is controlled by valves actuated by a pendulum 28 which may be immersed in a fluid or gas to provide viscous damping. An automatic locking device is included in the servo unit to prevent changes in geometry when the vehicle is not in use or there is insufficient fluid pressure to operate the servo unit. The length of the upper links may be variable instead of the positions of the pivots, and the invention is also applicable to struttype suspensions. The lateral forces may be detected from the steering mechanism or suspension members instead of by a pendulum.
