Abstract

1378938 Slow-release urea-formaldehyde fertilizers J A D CROPP (E L Douville and H C Messman) 6 March 1972 10315/72 Heading C1B [Also in Division C3] A slow-release fertilizer composition shaped into spikes comprises a water-soluble ureaformaldehyde resin, a granular filler and a binder cement derived from MgO and H 3 PO 4 , preferablyin amounts 30-50, 10-30 and 10-30 wt. per cent of the total, respectively, optionally with 5-10 wt. per cent potassium salts (as K 2 O), and 0À1-2 wt. per cent trace elements. Preferably the spikes are generally wedge-shaped, being formed by extrusion through a wedge-shaped die, followed by slicing and are 4-10 in. long, of 1-3 sq. in. in the face opposite the point, and have a crushing strength over 2000 p.s.i. In the example spikes are made from a mixture of 4À5% calcined magnesite, 11% of 75% H 3 PO 4 , 40À5% ureaform of 38% N content, 8À5% (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 , 13% KCl, 0À5% Fe 2 O 3 , 2% trace elements and 20% "fluid" petroleum coke (16-20 mesh).
