Abstract

1378672 Cleaners containing bleach PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 21 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 7964/72 Heading C5D [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A dry bleach and fabric-softening composition which may be used for treating textiles, sinks and dentures comprises: (A) from 8 to 60% by weight of a bleaching agent selected from (i) sodium monopersulphate, (ii) potassium monopersulphate, (iii) an organic peroxyacid or water-soluble salt thereof, said peroxyacid having the general formula wherein R is a substituted (e.g. by Cl) or un- substituted alkylene group or arylene group and Y is a group providing an anionic moiety in aqueous solution, e.g. COO, SO 2 , CO.OO-, and (iv) mixtures thereof; (B) from 10 to 60% by weight of a quaternary ammonium compound of the general formula wherein R 1 is an alkyl group containing from 12 to 20 carbon atoms; R 2 is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group containing from 5 to 8 carbon atoms, a carboxymethyl group, an aryl group containing from 6 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkaryl group containing from 7 to 10 carbon atoms, pyridyl, or a group of the general formula wherein a and b are 0 or integers and a+b is from 1 to 50; R 3 , R 4 and R 5 each represents an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, an aryl group containing from 6 to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group containing from 5 to 8 carbon atoms, a carboxymethyl group, an alkaryl group containing from 7 to 10 carbon atoms, pyridyl, or a group of the general formula -(C 3 H 6 O) a (C 2 H 4 O) b H, wherein a and b are 0 or integers and a + b is from 1 to 50; R 6 is a group selected from those given for R 3 , R 4 and R 5 or is H; R 7 is an alkylene group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, an arylene group containing 5 to 8 carbon atoms or a group of the formula wherein X is chloride, fluoride, nitrate, sulphate, methylsulphate, carbonate, chlorate, hydrogen phosphate, dihydrogen phosphate or hydroxide; and wherein n is 1 when X is monovalent and n is 2 when X is divalent; (C) from 10 to 75% by weight of a buffering agent effective to maintain the pH of the compositions in aqueous solution within the range of from 7 to 10; said composition containing a chlorine compound which will provide from 5 to 100 grams of chloride ions in aqueous solution per kilogram of the total composition. The chloride ions may be provided by the quaternary ammonium compound, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halide or a water-soluble transition metal halide. The composition may contain copper sulphate, chloride or nitrate, cobalt chloride, manganese bromide or nitrate, nickel nitrate and chromium chloride or bromide.
