Abstract

1390004 Biocidal composition OLIN CORP 6 Feb 1973 [27 March 1972] 5785/73 Heading ASE [Also in Division C5] An antibacterial and antifungal composition comprises a mixture of a heavy metal salt of a 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide compound and a quaternary ammonium compound having the following formula: wherein at least one of the R groups in the above formula is or contains a long chain alkyl group, is an alkyl group, aralkyl group, an alkylaryl group or an amide derivative of such a group and contains from 6 to 26 carbon atoms; the remaining R groups are selected from alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, and alkylaryl groups and amide derivatives of such groups and contain from 1 to 26 carbon atoms; with the proviso that two R groups may combine with the N atom to form an imidazoline ring structure; and X is a halogen anion or an alkyl sulphate anion having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms wherein said compounds are present in a weight ratio of 1:15 to 15:1 parts by weight of said mercaptopyridine to said quaternary ammonium compound. The heavy metal preferably is zinc, iron, tin, titanium, manganese or chromium. The compositions find application in laundering textile fabrics. Preferred 2-mercaptopyridine-1- oxide compounds are of the following formula: wherein M is selected from the heavy metals, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, ammonium and hydrogen. Other mercaptopyridine-1-oxide compounds which may be used include the disulphide (2, 2'-dithiodipyridine-1, 1'-dioxide), thioureas, amine and quaternary ammonium salts, thio and dithiocarbamates, esters and thioesters, thioethers and thio and dithiophosphate derivatives. More particularly, the mercaptopyridine-1-oxide compounds employed will be substantially water-insoluble. Such compounds include the heavy metals salts and more particularly the salts of zinc, iron, tin, titanium, manganese, chromium, copper, mercury, cobalt, lead, gold, cadmium, nickel, silver, arsenic, antimony and bismuth (the term "heavy-metal" including the heavy non-metals of metallic character). Particularly preferred quaternary ammonium compounds are the alkyl derivatives such as those having two long chain alkyl groups of 8 to 20 carbon atoms and two lower alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbons and the chloride or methosulphate as the anion group. Also preferred are the dialkyl imidazoline derivatives having one long chain alkyl of 8 to 20 carbon atoms, one lower alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbons and a long chain alkyl amidoalkyl having 8 to 26 carbons. Exemplary of the above-noted compounds are cetyl dimethyl ethyl ammonium bromide, ditallow dimethyl ammonium chloride, cocyl sarcosine, 2-heptadecyl-1- methyl-1-[2'-stearoyl amidoethyl] - imidazolinium chloride and the methosulphate of said compound, lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, stearyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride.
