1378178 Oxidation and ammoxidation processes DAVY POWERGAS Ltd 22 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54961/71 Addition to 1377735 Heading C2C A process for the oxidation, including ammoxidation, of hydrocarbons is characterized in that the hydrocarbon is incompletely converted in the reaction and the unconverted hydrocarbon is recycled to the reaction, the hydrocarbon in the reactor effluent being absorbed in a liquid absorbent and recovered therefrom by stripping the liquid absorbent with oxygen, nitrogen and sufficient of the said hydrocarbon that the upper flammable limit of the medium is exceeded, the stripping gas being returned with the recovered hydrocarbon to the reaction. The process may be the ammoxidation of propane or isobutane to acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile respectively or for the oxidation of propane or butane to acrolein, methacrolein, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. The stripping stage may be followed by a second stripping stage in which the stripping medium is a gas substantially inert under the reaction conditions, e.g. nitrogen, which may be separated from gas from the reaction.
