Abstract

A process for the recovery of molecular bromine from aqueous hydrobromic acid comprises contacting said acid in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising a dissolved soluble salt containing gold, cerium, copper, iron, chromium, nickel, platinum, thorium, titanium, or vanadium. The catalyst may be formed in situ from a precursor for the bromide of one of the metals, e.g. by dissolving iron, titanium, manganous oxide or platinum dioxide in the hydrobromic acid. Numerous catalysts are mentioned. The reaction is preferably carried out under superatmospheric pressure, and the mixture may be agitated. Air and oxygen are referred to as suitable gases, while the aqueous hydrobromic acid may be any acidified solution containing bromine ions, for example those obtained from fuel cells, brine, and effluent streams from bromination processes. Strong mineral acid may be added to brine to provide the necessary acidity in situ in the reaction zone. The vapours from the reaction zone may be fractionated to recover bromine, and any hydrobromic acid passing over returned to the reaction zone.
