Abstract

1377856 Flying saws SOC CIVILE D'ETUDES DE CENTRIFUGATION 3 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 5121/72 Heading B5L [Also in Division B3] A continuous tubular or solid casting 1, e.g. of steel at 900-1100‹ C., still advancing and rotating while being withdrawn (by rollers) from a rotated mould, is cut into lengths by a rotary saw 19, Fig. 1, carried along by the casting 1 and moved towards the casting axis. The saw, which may be cooled by water jets, is swung by an arm 8, which also supports an electric saw-driving motor 17, Fig. 2, about a pivot 11 on a frame 6, above the arm 8 and bearing a bottom plate 5. Alternatively, the saw may be mounted on a carriage for translation movement on the frame 6. A cylinder-and-piston 13, on an extension 14 from the frame, swings the arm 8. Swarf passes from a spout 21 of a casing 20 around the saws 19. An abutment 24, Fig. 2, presses on the descending casting below the saw to keep the cut open. The severed length is removed by a rotating cradle. Jaws 36, Fig. 5, for gripping the casting 1, are each slung on pivoted links 37, 38 (toothed sectors 39 on the latter ensure symmetrical movement) from a flanged sleeve 28 rotatable in support bearings 27, above the bottom 3 (see also plan view, Fig. 1) of a casing 2 supported by pivoted catches 4 on the plate 5 mounted on the bottom of the frame 6. Two hydraulic jacks 7 attached between the frame 6 and the casting machine structure raise the apparatus, and then the jaws grip the descending rotating casting 1 when the part to be cut is aligned both with the saw 19 and a semi-circular slot 23, Fig. 2, in a sleeve 22 subtended from the casing bottom 3. As the latter rotates and descends, the jacks 7 allow frame 6 and the apparatus to be drawn down by it and the bearings 27 allow the jaws 36 and their supports to be rotated by it. Compressed air to operate the jaws 36 is supplied through passages 30, 31 to two pistons- and-cylinders 40 at opposite sides of the jaws. They are attached between the ends of two shafts 42, one through each jaw 36, the cylinders of one being attached to the end of one shaft 42 at 41 and the end 43 of its piston-rod pivoted at the end of the other shaft 42.
