Abstract

1377367 Extruding FIELDING PLANT DESIGN Ltd and G W GRANT 8 Feb 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 4112/71 Heading B3P An hydraulic extrusion press has a die changing mechanism with a die carrier 1 which simultaneously moves a die from the press axis to an unloading station Y and a die from a loading station Z to the press axis. The carrier preferably has only three arms although more arms are provided if there are more stations such as inspection and trimming stations. The dies are loaded and unloaded by a pair of axially aligned hydraulic rams 7, 8, Fig. 2A, at each station. At the unloading station the rams combine to clamp the die 4 and its backing ring 5 for removal to a clamping device 18 which holds the backing ring while the die falls into a raised shoot 21 and rolls to a cleaning station 24. The die holder 6 is cleaned at the unloading station by a brush 26 with centrifugal arms 27. The brush 26 may be mounted on a pendulum arm 31 or on the front of the ram 8. At the loading station a pad of glass lubricant 36 may be loaded into the die holder recess 25a by a pivoted arm 38. The pad is pushed into the recess by the ram (8<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 2B (not shown), which acts on a plate (41) on an arm (42) pivoted to bring the plate into position. The die may be unloaded with the backing ring if desired.
