Abstract

1376942 Pneumatic conveyers CAMERON IRON WORKS Inc 9 Oct 1971 [8 March 1971] 32420/71 Heading B8A [Also in Division F2] Articles moving along a duct under fluid pressure, e.g. tools being conveyed between well-heads, are diverted by switches into branch ducts appropriate to their destination by interaction between the article and the switch which causes the switch to rotate to be aligned with said branch duct. The switch comprises a first part 23A coupled to the duct 21 and having a left handed spiral groove 56 in the bore 31 thereof and a second part 23B formed of two portions 29A, 29B fixed together for rotation within a housing, the first portion having a right handed spiral groove 55 and the second portion comprising a curved duct 37 to connect the bore 34 of the first portion 29A with a respective one of the branch ducts 21A-21D. The tool 50 is formed of two portions 51, 52 coupled together by a universal joint 50A and each having a key 53, 54 urged by springs (58), Fig. 7 (not shown), outwardly of the respective tool. The key 53 of the first portion 51 is angled to engage the spiral groove 55 and the key 54 of the second portion 52 is angled to engage the spiral groove 56. The latter being fixed causes the tool to rotate and thus causes the second part 23B of the switch to rotate to align the duct 37 with the appropriate outlet. The first portion 51 of the tool is adjustably rotatable relative to the second portion 52 of the tool by means of a pin (65), Fig. 5 (not shown) co-operating with appropriate apertures (66) in the coupling 50A, to determine the extent of the rotation of the second part 23B of the switch and thus its alignment with the appropriate outlet. In a further embodiment, Figs. 8, 13, 16 (not shown), the pipe-line (70) has a series of switches (72A), (72B), (72C) each with only one branch (71A), (71B), (71C) the angle of the groove 86 in the second part (82B) of the switch being different for each switch and the leading part (75B) of the tooling being chosen with a key (87) angled to correspond with the angle of the groove of the switch at which it should be deflected into a branch line. The groove (86) in the second part (82B) of each switch has lead-in portions (86B), (86C) at each end thereof to allow the movement of the tool in the reverse direction and in so doing to rotate the switch to its original position.
